I'm preeeety confident about this one

That I'm not the only one who thinks Donatella Versace and Linda Hogan (The Hulk's wife) look... THE SAME! like two witch sisters!

I can't put my finger on it though... could it be the peroxide bleach blonde hair? the trashy make up? the ugly fake tan? or the terrible plastic surgeries (note: plural)?

What could it POSSIBLY be?
hmmmmm....

HARPSSSSS :)

I wasn't even looking for new music when I found this lovely Joanna Newsom... the story is quite embarassing, but I'll share it with you anyway.

I'm sure you all know of Andy Samberg (the guy in SNL who does the "dick in the box" skit, or the "laser cats" and "I'm on a boat"). Well, I have a major crush on him, and was googling about him and see who his girlfriend was.... Up came this Joanna Newsom name, and that she's a musician. I obviously HAD TO check out her music on myspace, and I instantly fell in love <3

Joanna Newsom should change her name to Joanna AWESOME (she probably gets that all the time... I fail.)

Bro in a Bra

So, Japanese bra-brands have ventured into the "man bra" business... and apparently, it's a hit.
I'm not even kidding, see for yourself:
http://search.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/fl20090510x7.html

PS- reminds me of one of my favorite jokes:
A dyslexic walks into a bra....
HAHAHAHAHAHA, love it.

Hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia

is a real phobia. It's the fear of the number 666.

Triskaidekaphobia is the fear of the number 13.

And paraskevidekatriaphobia or friggatriskaidekaphobia is the fear of "Friday the 13th".

Are there THAT many ppl diagnosed with this that they HAD TO make up this ridiculously difficult and uselessly long word for it? Why couldn't they have called it Trihexaphobia, or something ATLEAST simple to remember like that? Did they HAVE TO use these ancient greek or latin words to make up difficult words? My theory is that the psychologist wanted to be the creators of the new "Supercalifragilisticexpia
lidocious" word.

"Haven't you heard? Hexakosioihexekontahexaphobia is the new Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!" *cheesy wink with tongue click and shooting-a-gun hand gesture*

My fear is that I can't pronounce these long phobia names. And since I don't think there's an official name for that, I think I'll make it up right now.... but since I don't speak Greek or Latin, I'm gonna do it in English. That's right boys and girls, I have pronouncinguselesslylonganddifficultphobianameswrongphobia. The irony being, that this phobia itself has a very uselessly long and difficult phobia name....

But on a real note, there IS a phobia of long words, and it is called:
Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliaphobia. Oh sweet, sweet irony.... I love thee.

And talking of long words, I got curious and googled what the longest word in the English language is... are you curious? Ok, let's see if you can actually say it:
Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis.

That's FORTY FIVE letters! I guess the name is quite descriptive in that I can sorta imagine it's something to do with the lungs, and an ultra microscopic silicon particle(?) from a volcanic eruption perhaps? Regardless, I still find it quite ridiculous. These are the kinda things that make me question whether scientists really ARE smart. WTF, doctors who made this name, WTF! Why couldn't they just name it the Johnson Disease, or name it after the doctor who discovered it... probably a German dude. They're always German dudes... are there volcanic eruptions in Germany? so maybe it was Italian... who the fuck cares, you're right. Or was there a team of Dr. Pneumo, a Dr. Mono, a Dr.Ultramicroscopic and a Dr. Silicovocano?

....ok, I'll stop... that was pretty lame, even for me. haha. Although I can't help but laugh at Dr.Ultramicroscopic! HAHAHAHAHA. Says something about your ancestry and their ummm.... you know, "equipment"? ;) hahaha

Doctor: Unfortunately, you have Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis.
Patient: What? *cough cough* (naturally, he has to cough if he has something microscopic in his lungs...)
Doctor: Sir, you have Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis.
Patient:.....WHAT?
Doctor: Don't make me say it again.... you'll live, so it doesn't matter what you have.
Patient: Excuse me but I don't like your attitu...cough cough.
Doctor: Atleast your name isn't Ultramicroscopic so stop bitching.

I think this is gonna be my all time favorite. End of conversation.

The internetz is for narcissists....and yes, that's how you spell narcissists

I always think that facebook's "25 random facts about you" notes, facebook statuses, myspace statuses, and especially TWITTER, is for narcissists.... And yes, I am one of those addicts- minus the twitter addiction. I still have to poke fun at myself, though.... because I don't want to take myself too seriously, hahaha. I mean, who the EFF cares if you're listening to Jack Johnson (I happen to be listening to him right now) while sipping on the greatest cup of tea of your entire life (yes, doing that too) or about some random, possibly cryptic song lyrics that may or may not describe how you're feeling at that specific moment. Seriously, who the fuck cares? Let me tell you: NOBODY! And yet, I am sooooo addicted to facebook. I'm so narcissistic by my own definition.... What. a. surprise!

The thing is, nobody cares when it's someone else that had to be carried to the ER this weekend, won the Nobel Prize, finally solved world hunger, or has a baby niece (actually, I do, but that's beside the point)... Most people obviously want the entire world to know what THEY'RE up to, cuz... let's face it... you are the center of your universe, and you are the funniest, wittiest, most INTERESTING person you know, and everybody cares.... *whispers: everybody. We crave for attention and reassurance that we are INDEED hilarious to everyone else as much as we are to ourselves, hahaha. You're sure everyone is anticipating your hilarious one-line status, sympathize with you if you're stuck at work with a hangover, or wish you luck if you're in the library finishing 6 papers by Wednesday, or get jealous cuz you're at the beach drinking mojitos, or totally understand your craving for chocolate icecream at 3am in the morning, or "like" whatever cool thing you can concoct in 140 letters or less.... and it's worse with Twitter, I'm assuming, cuz you can put a Twitter-application in your phone... Narcissism on the go!

@Elisa: OMFG I h8 life, I'm going to kill myself, brb, ttyl bb :)

I've had this theory for a while now, that the internetz is for narcissists (myself included) but when I heard that Elizabeth Taylor has a Twitter account, and that she's addicted to it, I felt like the Gods gave me a wink and a thumbs-up on my "Twitter is for Narcissists" theory....

This is how Darwin must've felt when he found those darn little finches.

Salepi Dondurma, the Turkish Ice cream, translates to WHAT?!

Have you ever tried Turkish ice-cream before? it's really really yummy. It's nothing like the other ice-creams you've had before. It's creamy, chewy and even stretchy! It's like the Stretch-Arm-Man toy of ice-creams.... but delicious.

Anyway, so I was reminded of them today, and when there's something I don't really know about, I usually go to Wikipedia or what-not, and do a little mini-research on it. (I know I'm a dork, but I'm proud of it! haha) So I find its wikipedia page, and they're called "Dondurma".
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dondurma#cite_note-2

To sum up the description, they're stretchy ice-creams that come in different flavors... one of which is the "salepi" flavor made of orchids. Side note: because of the popularity of this ice-cream, there was a threat to wild-orchid populations in Turkey! Interesting for me, being a biologist and all.... hmmmm "sustainable ice-creams, anyone?" ANYWAY, so I continue reading the description.... and it reads:

There are many different flavors of dondurmas. (I'm thinking, uh huh, sure, like strawberry, banana, chocolate.... and then I read: The literal translation of salepi dondurma is "fox testicle ice cream".

*sound of record scratching* and I do a double take, wait, WHAT? I read again:
"The literal translation of salepi dondurma is.... "fox testicle ice cream"

Yep, you read it right, my friend. Salepi Dondurma's translate to FOX TESTICLE ICE CREAM....
WTF, right? WHAT THE EFFFFF? I seriously heard the sound of a record scratch in my head! Being the mega-dork, know-it-all wanna-be that I am, I HAD TO click on the citation it has which leads me to another article:

http://www.salon.com/wlust/feature/1998/11/17feature.html
it says:

The word "salep" comes from the Arabic sahlab, which means "fox testicles." Ali showed me a handful of the dried tubers, and although I have never had the opportunity to examine a fox that closely, the paired, ovoid spheres did bear a striking resemblance to that part of the male anatomy. Ancient accounts referred to this similarity, and the first-century Greek physician Dioscorides recommended the use of orchid tubers as an aphrodisiac. The word orchis in Greek means "testicle," and so it seems that human interest in orchids was originally focused on the erotic aftereffects of eating the tubers rather than on the cultivation of plants for their showy floral displays.

Interesting! I knew that Orchids have sexual connotations, but I thought it was for female body parts... so I got curious as to what this flower looks like and I wikipedia-ed this Salepi flower. Here's the botanical drawing I get:

Do they look like fox testicles to you? Like the author says, I've never had the opportunity to carefully inspect fox testicles before, but, this is NOT what I had imagined them to look like.... Is that what fox testes look like?... scratch that, is that what ANY animal's testes look like?

So yeah, there's really no point to this blog other than: "WTF, Turkish Ice cream, W-T-F?"

I guess people in Turkey don't say "I scream, you scream, we all scream for SALEPI DONDURMAS"... cuz that's just a little too embarrassing.... hahaha

I'm lovin' it :) although some of them have transformed my cute little ponies into... blobs.

Mayflies

Mayflies (pictured above) spend 2 yrs underwater as larvae.

ONLY when they've gone through their first metamorphosis to come out of the water, survive the fish that eat them once they get out of the water, THEN the predatory birds, and manage to fly to the edge of the pond and find a good branch, they get to go through metamorphosis for the final time... :D Yay! Go Mayflies!

But... hey, Creationists, are you listening to this?

They DON'T have a mouth or stomach- which obviously means they can NOT eat or digest ANYTHING. So they can fly for about 30 minutes using their fat reserves (if they have any!).... and FIRST have to find a mate within those 30 minutes... THEN fight off all the males that also want her, AND get "at it" without drowning.

Now, I don't know what your definition of "intelligent" is.... but..... that isn't "ingelligent" to me!

Seriously, God, why didn't you give those poor mayflies a mouth? Would have been a lot more intelligent AND would give them more time to enjoy life 'outta da watah', don't you think?

PS- This reminds me a bit of The Little Mermaid in a strange, morbid The-REAL-Hans-Christian-An
derson sort of way?
Water -> metamorphosis (gets legs) -> land -> time limit to find Prince -> no voice (mouth) -> must die if can not kiss Prince! Wait... are mermaids mayflies of the sea?! NO!!!!

There's no way this is just me...

Grateful Days vs You got it Good

BLASPHEMY!

For us Tokyo International School kids, Dragon Ash's song "Grateful Days" is almost like an anthem.... and my friend Remy tells me that it's been ripped.

So here is the OBVIOUSLY covered song...

1) Jem, Got it Good:

2) I think most of you know the song Grateful Days, but for those of you who don't:

3) but then again, the intro to Grateful Days is also sampling Smashing Pumpkin's song, Today:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RHUd896Sur0

Man, am I a geek or what? hahahaha

But does anyone know if this JEM woman is "officially" covering/sampling Dragon Ash's song? or is there another original to the chorus of Grateful Days? (other than Canon in D... cuz that's WAAAY past the copyright expiration date, or whatever they're called, haha)

Am I the only one whoooooo....

Thinks Ladyhawke ripped Gary Numan's song CARS for her song "Paris is Burning" ?? or is it supposed to be that way?

Here are the two songs:
